Michael Hughes has been woodturning for 20 years and built a reputation for high quality items.

Michael works the complete process;

• Chain sawing the initial felled tree, often sourced locally from trees already destined to be felled
• Rough sizing the wood to find suitable grain, shapes, patterns in the wood
• Rough turning the wood while its "green" ( still full of water )
• Patiently air drying the wood over a number of months - often over 12 months
• before finally returning the item to the lathe once more for final turning and finishing

Michael is happy to open the studio evenings or weekends to discuss all aspects of how beautiful turned items are made using the natural material of wood

Some pieces are turned using the traditional centuries old method of pole lathe turning - a "green" process that uses no power other than human power.
